Now that you have handle on all of the baby gear and toys that you will need, let's move on to Feeding, Sleeping, Diapering/Bath time, & Layette.
Clothing: All those adorable matching outfits may need to wait a couple of weeks. When you first bring baby home a soft one piece, also known as a layette, will be the most comfortable thing for your baby to wear. You will want to have several of these on hand, it is amazing how much laundry a little 8 pound baby can require. Caden Lane recently created a a funky layette line,
Pitty Shants that is comfortable for babies and stylish too.
Shirts with snaps, also called a onesie, are an ideal top for a new baby. Pants should be elastic so they are easy to get on and off.
Hats are very important no matter what time of year baby is born. You will either need to protect your little one from cold or sun.
Socks are essential to the newborn’s wardrobe and you should have several pairs. You will be amazed how many times you find your baby has lost one sock.
Sleepers come in a zip up style and a snap style. I found the zipper style to be more convenient during diaper changes. Purchase at least four sleepers, in the style you prefer.
Diapering: You will need around 8-12 diapers per day. It is helpful to have a weeks supply purchased ahead of time, but do not over buy on the newborn size, you will be amazed how fast your baby grows. Baby wipes for the house and for the diaper bag are a good idea. A diaper pail will help keep down the odor of those diapers. A changing pad is very useful, it can be used at home or while on the go.
Washing & Grooming:
Baby tub, mild baby wash, wash cloths, hooded towels, brush/comb, nail clippers that are designed for babies, cotton balls & swabs and a thermometer. A rectal thermometer provides the most accurate reading in infants.
When all the shopping is done, the clothes are washed and put away and the teeny tiny diapers are stacked neatly by the changing table you will still wonder, "do i have everything I need?" Yes, you do because all that really matters is your baby has you, to hold and love her.
After the baby arrives and things settle down you will realize you have your own "must have" item that you could not have lived without. For me it was the bouncy seat, using this was often the only way I could grab a 5 minuet shower.
